World Surf League Competition at Pismo Beach
Want to check out up-and-coming surfers from around the world without having to leave the comfort of the Central Coast? Head over to the SLO CAL Open, part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series. Surfers will compete daily beginning on Thursday, January 30 and ending on Sunday, February 2, 2020.
Where to Go
The competition will be held near the Pismo Beach Pier, located at 100 Pomeroy Ave right in the heart of Pismo Beach. A second event will be held in Morro Bay as part of the same series from February 27 to March 1.
Who Will Be There?
Surfers from across the United States and over 12 other countries will flock to Pismo Beach to attend the Qualifying Series. They will include 96 male and 32 female competitors.
Expect to see visitors from around the world coming out to see the big event and spend time around town, as well. Given Pismo Beach’s proliferation of beautiful, ocean view properties, some new visitors might even decide to stay.
The World Surf League in California
As of this year, there are only three World Surf League qualifying competitions held annually in California. The newly added SLO CAL will perform a much-needed role by functioning as the QS1000’s.
What’s great about the Qualifying Series is that these smaller events offer a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to the sport. It’s not uncommon to see young people entering into their first or second competitions. Spectators will get the chance to see who’s got what it takes, recognize some familiar faces and be introduced to new ones, and gather together to appreciate California’s state sport.
Opportunities for Sponsorship
The SLO CAL Open is being organized and hosted by Surfers of Tomorrow and Visit SLO CAL, but there are plenty of opportunities for other local businesses and organizations to get involved as sponsors. The proceeds will go to local, surfing-related non-profits and programs.
About Surfers of Tomorrow
The mission of this locally-based non-profit is to promote both competitive surfing and environmental stewardship. Founded by Andy McKay just two years ago, Surfers of Tomorrow inspires youth through their Junior Surfers Program, provides education about coastal and ocean ecosystems, and partners with other like-minded organizations. With the help of Surfers of Tomorrow, today’s young surfers will still have beautiful, clean, and vibrant waves to surf for years to come.
About Visit SLO CAL
Surfers of Tomorrow’s partner in organizing this event is a small but well-known local destination marketing non-profit dedicated to helping visitors find out about everything that San Luis Obispo County has to offer. Their mission is to introduce more visitors to the Central Coast’s unique way of life and establish the city as a top tourist destination.
Visiting Pismo Beach for the First Time
Plenty of attendees to this World Surf League Qualifying Series will be visiting Pismo Beach for the very first time. There’s plenty to do besides attending the competition, so plan to spend at least a few extra days.
